I've never claimed to be an expert on movies but, my goodness! "Star Wars: Episode III: The Revenge of the Cyst: The Movie: The Last Installment of a Six-Part Series: The Final Chapter of the Prequil Trilogy to the Previously-viewed Trilogy: Lightsabers are Cool" is a magnificent spectical of sight and sound!
Can you imagine a universe where lasers come out of flashlights... but they don't shoot out into space for eternity?! They stop magically after about 3 feet! And they make this amazing "Waow wuh wuh wuh Bfvvvssfv...Waaaaaow" sound! And when people use them, the room gets darker and sparks start falling out of the walls and ceiling! It's all true!
...At least in the wonderful mind of George Lucas! But Mr. Lucas doesn't stop with just one or two of these "Sabers of Light." No. He has, like, hundreds of them...all going at the same time! What chance does evil have with this many lightsabers flicking away the lasers that are cruely being shot at them? "NO CHANCE AT ALL!," you scream?
Well, you're wrong! Evil is really pretty smart. And talented. And wears a hood just barely over it's eyes. And ... guess what ... Evil has Lightsabers, too! Oh no.
Luckily, there are these things called Wookies. They're big and fuzzy and their species name rhymes with "cookies." But, careful. Wookies are BIG! And they know how to pack a punch. They also know how to make sure that Yoda has an escape pod! I don't want to give away too much of the movie but here is one of my favorite scenes in the movie:
Yoda and Chewbacca, probably America's favorite Wookie, and ... Wookie #2 ... are standing outside of an escape pod located in the suburbs of Wookietown.
Chewbacca: Wmmuugggghuuugh.
Wookie #2: (tilts head) Wuuugghlmuggh.
Chewbacca: (tilts head) Muuggggh?
Wookie #2: (tilts head opposite direction) Mmmmuuuggh!
Chewbacca: (barely moves head) Wmmuugggghuuugh!!!
Yoda: (confused) What are you...?
Wookie #2: (interrupts, tilts head) Wuuugghlmuggh.
NOTE: If you and your friends want to reenact this scene in your mom's basement, I would reccomend that the actors portraying the Wookies gargle pudding while delivering lines. Yoda can gargle pudding, too, just not while he is speaking.
And the dialogue gets even better when they use English; the accepted language of the entire universe. Take, for instance, the scene when Anakin Skywalker Ranch turns into Darth Vader for the first time, surprising everyone !
Darth Vader: (arms held out) Nooooooooooooooooo!
Audience: Nooooooooooooooooo!
Powerful.
Again, I don't want to give away too much but I think there is some strong evidence put forth in this installment that Senator Ovaltine is not a very nice person. I don't think he's as pro-democracy as he lets on!
But I digress. My point is, "Star Wars: The War in the Stars" is possibly the best movie shot completely on a computer without being considered animation ever made. Ever.
See it again for the first time. But, be warned: There is a dark side to the force. Dark and/or boring. You might be better off seeing this movie.
Posted by HFT Wes at May 23, 2005 03:23 PM | TrackBackJust to let you know me and my friend read this in Computer class and we could not stop laughing!
Its great!!
I think the teacher thinks we're more nuts now then she did before...
but we think you are on your way to becoming one of the best movie critics EVER!
Posted by: Melanie at May 25, 2005 10:04 AMThat's good to hear, Melanie. It's important to get a good education. I'm glad you and your friend understand that ... even if your teacher doesn't!
Hey, did you click the links? Some of them are really fun.
Posted by: HFT Wes at May 25, 2005 12:55 PMInformative and insightful! George Lucas should give this review his seal of approval in between signing merchandising deals. :D
Posted by: David Klug at May 25, 2005 06:40 PMExcellent review, one of two good ones I've seen. The other was by Mark Morford, and was titled, "May the Force Please Go Away."
Unhappily, almost knows what I think is the best outgrowth of the Lucas juggernaut, the indie film "Hardware Wars": low budget, low production values, great wit, great fun. Something like the film version of improv.
Wes, thank you for your blog!
Posted by: Howard Abts at May 26, 2005 01:05 PMOops. Sorry about the bad proorfeading.
Posted by: Howard Abts at May 26, 2005 01:09 PMI've seen Hardware Wars, Howard. Good stuff. Very funny. That came out a looooong time ago! Wow. Nice work. Check this out...

Posted by: HFT Wes at May 26, 2005 02:06 PMIdiot! I haven't see "War in the Stars Tres" yet and you're totally ruining it for me. Gosh! Now I know important stuff like there's gargling pudding and Anakin Skywalker Ranch turns into Darth Vader?!
I'm just a little T.O.-ed right now. I wish I had a time machine so I could go back to before I read this blog. That would be awesome.
Posted by: Steve K. at May 27, 2005 12:14 PMI know a Napoleon Dynamite impersonation when I hear it. And, hey, if you're not willing to wait in line for a week to see it at midnight "the day before" it opens like the rest of us hard core geeks, then I can't be held responsible for your indifference. I mean, girls want to date guys with skills. You know?
Posted by: HFT Wes at May 27, 2005 03:22 PMit is so great to hear a view from a guy who can critic with skill. It is proably all true. But ya know I just liked it any way. It was just fun. I just didn't expect more than I got . Second time I watched the film I kept thinking how the Chanc Palpatine (the bad guy) was giving Anakin another little speech about he understood Anakin and how those others just didn't appreicate his abilites...... etc.... I kept thinking how the serpent must have been like that with Eve and Adam. How easily we are convinced that we deserve more.... Ah ! I am looking forward to the Narnia movie.

Wow. Ninjas are awesome. Not just for Ninjaing either. For being your roommate and stuff, too. Thanks, Timmy D. I realize now that I've been stereotyping and didn't even know it.
Posted by: HFT Wes at May 31, 2005 01:25 AMdid you erase my comments that I made earlier Wes? What's the deal?
Posted by: jeremy at June 5, 2005 10:47 AMWell, ok, so some of the acting wasn't the greatest, and a lot of it was done with computer animation. But, It was still a really awesome movie. The lightsaber duals were the best of any of the Star Wars movies to date, and the space and ground battles were extremely awesome too. So, thats what I have to say to your post. Peaces >
God Bless,
the PowerBookNerd
Hey Jeremy...
I did not erase your previous comments! I never saw them. It's possible our SPAM blocker did it automatically, but it shouldn't have done that. If it did, I apologize. If I accidentally did it, the SPAM blocker apologizes.
Please, please, please...I'm dying to here from someone who probably waited in line to see the movie!! What did you say?
Posted by: HFT Wes at June 7, 2005 12:15 AMI think the most profound thing I said was in the form of a scolding for not spelling "wookiee" correctly.
Other then that, it's hard to comment on your "review" of the movie because of the numerous technical and logistical errors that cause me to wonder if you really actually watched the movie or just overhead some guy trying to explain the movie to his wife at the bus stop or something.
But I'm not trying to bash your movie reviewing skills.
Posted by: NM Jer at June 7, 2005 02:07 PMOh. I see. Yeah. I would've erased that if I'd had the chance.
I did watch the movie. And, quite frankly, enjoyed it a lot more than the first two prequals. But...even more frankly than before, I did not enjoy it as much as the original three. This is partly due to the fact that I'm not ten anymore. But mostly due to the fact that those movies were more interesting.
Anyway, I'm still glad we can be friends. And I think it's sad that you might be moving a lot farther south than New Mexico. Shoot, you really want to get away from me, don't you?
Posted by: HFT Wes at June 8, 2005 02:16 AMWell technically Africa is not south of New Mexico, although it is nearer to the equator, which I guess makes it "more south". But as compared to you I'm really moving more East. (Or west depending on which way the pilot decides to take us).
I did enjoy SW 3 much more then the first two, but not quite as much as the original 3. I think it's more on par with the original 3 and I think it was a pretty well done close the whole Star Wars thing.
I think really the main thing that would've made it better (besides some better dialogue writing and way more special effects) would be the first two being better. It was hard to believe in Anakin's "fall" when you really didn't have much emotional stock in his love of the princess because it was written and acted so horribly in the first two.
And he turned to the dark side just a bit too easily for my taste. I understand how Lucas wanted it to work but it didn't. It ended up being.
Anakin: I need to be a jedi
Palpatine: The dark side is better.
Anakin: No it's not!
Palpatine: Yes it is!
Anakin: Ok, I'll go slaughter the kids.
Oh I also wanted to add that I saw Hitchhiker's twice and thoroughly enjoyed. I hope they make the next installment. Those are some of my favorite books.
I coulda done with a little less focus on the love story though.
Posted by: NM Jer at June 8, 2005 12:21 PMI agree with everything that you've said in these past two comments. I stand by the notion that Africa is south of New Mexico, though. I meant south in the big picture, global climate, latitudinal way... the way you described it. That's all. I saw a globe one time, so I think I'm not too far off in my analysis.
AND ... like you, I thought the "love interest" plots in both Star Wars and Hitchhiker's were really weak. I think the girl that was in Hitchhiker's was horrible, though. I think she made the "love interest" a lot harder to believe because her acting was so affected. Eegh.
AND ... YES! Anakin's switch to the Dark Side was pathetic! You nailed it there, buckaroo.
Anyway. The bottom line is that we are both huge nerds. And that's what's important.
Posted by: HFT Wes at June 8, 2005 03:53 PMWe may be nerds but at least we're both married. So that's gotta count for something.
Posted by: NM Jer at June 9, 2005 10:47 AMHa! Amen, brother. Amen.
Posted by: HFT Wes at June 9, 2005 01:14 PMYou guys are the 22615 best, thanks so much for the help.
